Hybrid cars are getting a lot of attention from consumers looking to purchase a new car. One reason is that they use less gas and therefore save you a lot of money at the pumps. However, their popularity is not just based on their fuel saving design, they also require less maintenance than that of their conventional cousins.

It can be frustrating to have to take time off from work to go to the mechanic for maintenance checks and repairs. It is equally frustrating to use up part of your weekends for this as well. Owning a Hybrid helps you to avoid this frustration, thanks to their unique design. There are various features that contribute to these benefits.

One reason is that they have fewer parts than conventional cars. For example, the Hybrid vehicle does not have a starter. A car that has fewer parts requires less maintenance and less maintenance means less expense. Another important factor is that the engine is smaller, between 10 to 20 horsepower and designed to run more efficiently by using only one speed.

The generator runs on a separate, gas powered motor and contributes to the lesser need for maintenance. It also does things that conventional vehicles need additional parts for. The generator handles 80 percent of the braking, which helps to extend the life of the brake system. It does this in several ways, such as preserving brake fluid. Brake fluid can be contaminated by the effects of over heating, so by minimizing the heat exposure, the life of the brake fluid is extended. The lesser heat usage also helps reduce the risk of warped rotors. By the generator taking on more tasks, the battery usage is less and therefore will have to be replaced less often.

Another great feature that the design offers is that the air conditioner runs off of electricity and not gas. The steering system is superior in that it is also electric and does not require a belt the way hydraulic systems do. It also provides a smoother ride on rough road surfaces.

Other maintenance saving features are that the valve system requires no adjustments and the injectors don't have to be cleaned.

Hybrid vehicles offer longer warranties that also include the battery. This definitely adds to their attraction. The Prius, offered by Toyota, offers an eight year or 100,000 mile warranty that includes the hybrid system. The Honda Insight warranty offers 8 years or 80,000 miles and includes the power train.

When considering purchasing a new vehicle, definitely think about owning a hybrid. They require less maintenance than the conventional cars and therefore save you money and time spent at the auto shop. They are much more fuel efficient, and offer attractive warranties.

Types Of Alternative Fuels: What's Out There

When looking into making the switch to alternative fuel use for your vehicle, there are a number of options. Based on price, availability, and motivation the best option for one consumer is not always the best option of another. For an alternative fuel to truly be viable it has to be both accessible to, and usable by, the consumer. In today's world the viable alternative fuels on the market are mainly; ethanol, biodiesel, electricity, and natural gas.

Ethanol fuel is made from the fermentation and distilling of starch vegetation like corn, although it also can be made from trees and grasses. Ethanol is widely available in two varieties, commonly referred to as E10 and E85. E10 Ethanol, sometimes referred to as gasohol, is a mixture of 90% standard gasoline and 10% ethanol. Almost all manufacturers approve of the use of E10 Ethanol in their gasoline powered vehicles. E85 Ethanol is a mixture of 85% ethanol and only 15% gasoline. To run a car on E85 ethanol it has to be a specially designed flex fuel automobile that is capable of using E85. Flex fuel automobiles are becoming more and more common and most vehicle manufacturers offer at least one model.

The cost of ethanol, either E10 or E85, does vary from region to region. Usually it is found to be cheaper than gasoline in more rural areas and somewhat more expensive in more urban areas, possibly having something to do with how closely the consumer is located to where it is grown and manufactured. The only widely reported change in vehicle performance when using E85 ethanol is a small drop in the gas mileage, thought to be due to the lower energy output of ethanol.

Diesel-like fuel manufactured from vegetable oils, recycled vegetable oil, or animal fats is called biodiesel. Biodiesel is a cleaner burning biodegradable option to conventional petroleum based diesel fuel. Biodiesel is not pure vegetable or cooking oil, these oils do have to go through a manufacturing process. Biodiesel can be used both pure and blended with standard diesel fuel. B2 and B5, 2% biodiesel and 5% biodiesel respectively, are the most common blends of biodiesel and can safely be used in almost any standard diesel engine. Some warranties may be voided if using biodiesel at a greater strength than 5%, like B20 (20% biodiesel).

Biodiesel can be produced domestically from vegetation grown specifically for the production of fuel. The cost can vary for using biodiesel from higher to lower than the price of gasoline, although if manufactured at home (which is possible) the price is significantly lower. Biodiesel is safer to handle and emits less greenhouse gases than conventional diesel fuel. Fuel economy can suffer minimally with the use of biodiesel and research is being done on its effects on engine parts.

Electric cars are nothing new to the alternative fuel scene and, in fact were quite popular in the early 1990's. The need for long recharging periods and limited travel distances impeded the Electric car's progress in the open market. Hybrid cars are available now that are powered partly by gasoline and partly by an electric generator. Hybrid cars have preserved the main benefit of electric cars by giving outstanding fuel economy and solved the problems of recharging periods needed (none) and range of travel (unlimited, as long as there's fuel). There are biodiesel hybrid cars in the development or early marketing stage that would even solve the petroleum based gasoline problem of current hybrids.

One of the absolute cleanest burning alternative fuels available is natural gas. Cars and trucks can use either compressed or liquefied natural gas as a fuel source. Dual fuel cars can run on natural gas or gasoline/diesel fuel. This is a very efficient use of the technology as now when natural gas is not available, the car can be filled up and ran on gasoline or diesel. The downside to this is that storage or passenger space may be limited by the need of the car to have two complete fueling systems on board. Cars designed to run on natural gas only do not have this problem, but they may have the problem of it sometimes being inconvenient to find a location to fuel their vehicle. Natural gas powered cars and trucks are not widely produced yet but there are after market kits available to convert a standard gasoline or diesel engine into a natural gas powered car.

Natural gas produces up to 90% less smog related pollutants than conventional gasoline. The gas itself is less expensive than gasoline and much of it can be produced instead of imported. Though substantially cheaper, natural gas does get fewer miles on a tank of gas.

Hydrogen power is being heavily researched as an alternative fuel source. Hydrogen can be used either in fuel cells to power electric engines or burned like conventional fuel in an internal combustion engine. When used in fuel cells, hydrogen produces no smog causing emissions or greenhouse gases, and it produces a very limited amount of emissions when burned like conventional fuel. While Hydrogen is readily available, it currently is very expensive to produce. The storage room needed for enough Hydrogen fuel to fuel a car for a longer trip is another challenge facing Hydrogen. Also, currently the vehicles able to run on fuel cells are priced far too high for most consumers to be able to afford.

Though cost and a vehicle's performance vary from situation to situation, almost all alternative fuels benefit the environment and reduce a nation's reliance on oil producing countries. In the future, because of the wide variety of needs of the world's consumers, there will most likely not be just one alternative fuel in use, but many. Diversifying the sources of potential fuel can lead to more benefits from the pursuit of alternative fuel development. For now, it is important to have the knowledge that there are other options than petroleum based fuel powered cars.

How You Can Save Money and Energy With the New Plug-in Electric Hybrid Car

A new prototype hybrid car was revealed by Pacific Gas & Electric Co. Not only does it save on gas, but it can be used to power homes and businesses during blackouts or during hot summer days when energy prices soar.

In addition to reducing energy cost, V2G technology will allow consumers to be able to sell back energy to the utility during the hot summer months when energy demand is the highest. Hybrid vehicle owners may sell energy at the price threshold they select. When the price reaches this point, the utility will automatically take energy from the vehicle. The owner will have enough energy left over for the drive home. Payment to the vehicle's owner can be made in the form of earned credits from the amount of energy used by the utility toward their monthly energy bill.

V2G technology can increase the availability of renewable energy used during peak energy hours. Plug-in electric hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) may charge their batteries at night when energy is inexpensive and is generated with a larger percentage of renewable resources. While electrical utilities usually have to buy power from expensive, less efficient, fossil fuel power generating sources during the day or times of maximum demand. But with PHEVs, utilities may purchase the renewable energy stored in the vehicle batteries.

PG&E demonstrated the first-ever utility Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) technology at Silicon Valley Leadership Group Alternative Energy Solutions Summit in California. The PHEV, a converted Toyota Prius, featured a 180 pound lithium battery that takes up the bottom of a back trunk where a tire would go. The vehicle produces about 9 kilowatts of electricity while the average house uses about 2.5 kilowatts of electricity on hour.

The PHEVs charge by plugging into a three-prong 110- to 120-volt outlet. Flipping a switch sends the charge to the home from the car, if the home needs energy during a blackout or high energy consumption days.

For the demonstration, the Prius ran several lights and appliances after reversing the flow of energy from the outlet to the vehicle.

The plug-ins, like the traditional hybrid, have both electric motors and batteries as well as a gasoline engine which turns on when the car runs about 20 to 25 miles per hour.

A plug-in hybrid vehicle with its larger battery, uses its gasoline engine less often and gets about 100 miles per gallon. In contrast, a 2007 Toyota Prius reaches about 55 miles per gallon in combined city and highway driving.

PG&E officials did not release a timeline of when V2G hybrid cars would be available to the general public. Since the auto industry is not yet increasing production of electric vehicles which require larger batteries, the PHEVs are not likely to be produced before 2012.

What this means to you, is that you will have way to turn your vehicle into a power storage system that will conserve energy and reduce dependence on foreign oil.

Rent a Hybrid Car When You Travel

You can rent a hybrid car on your next trip to California, Phoenix or Vegas, but you better call ahead. The availability of these exciting new vehicles is limited and rentals are in very high demand.

But when you rent a hybrid car, you can save money on gas and support the environment at the same time. Plus, if you're thinking of buying one, renting before hand is a great way to check out the new technology.

Whatever the reason, customers are lining up at EV Rental cars.

Thanks to Jeff Pink's entrepreneurial spirit and his mission to save the planet, EV Rentals opened its doors in 1998 as the first and only hybrid electric rental company in the U.S. And Pink now has the biggest fleet of these vehicles anywhere in the country.

There are over 400 hybrids to rent in eight western airport locations – Los Angeles, San Diego, Santa Ana, San Francisco, San Jose, Oakland, Phoenix and Las Vegas. And Pink now has a partnership with discount Fox Rent A Car and is getting ready for expansion with plans for 2,500 brand new hybrids.

As you may already know, these cars are pretty hard to come by. There just aren't that many available and they're certainly not accessible at the gas car fleet prices offered to Hertz and Avis. This means EV Rentals has to buy their automobiles one at a time at retail prices. But they do get some help through government consumer education program grants.

Right now, you have a choice of renting a Toyota Prius, a Toyota Highlander and a Honda Civic Hybrid. All three are recommended by Consumer Reports and get between 35 mpg to 60 mpg in town and on the road.

And, in the state of California, with a hybrid, you get to drive in the carpool lane even when you're driving alone. That, by itself, can save you a small fortune in time and money when tooling around LA.

EV Rentals' mission is to "provide the most technologically advanced environmental vehicles to the general public as soon as they're available, to educate the public and to raise the awareness of the benefits of driving clean-fuel vehicles, and to create a market for clean vehicle technology."

The management team at EV Rentals believes it's time for people to start thinking more about protecting the environment. They're extremely proud to have prevented over "100 tons of air pollution and to have passed on to their customers more than $1 million in fuel cost savings by acting environmentally."

However, be aware that when you rent a hybrid car, it will probably cost you more than for a conventional gas model. And, even though you pay less for gasoline, you'll still have to drive a lot of miles each day to make up the difference.

Right now, until auto manufacturer's economies of scale kick in, owners of these exciting new vehicles have the same problem.

But consider this. When renting a new Prius in LA, you'll be driving the same car Leonardo DiCpario drives. I'm sure he considers the extra expense as either an investment in the environment or the cost of being extremely cool. You could too!

A hybrid car is such a car in which two types of motors are synchronized to provide power to the wheels. The most popular combination is the one in which the gasoline engine is assisted by the electric motor so that the gas engine is periodically shut off in order to reserve fuel.

Usually hybrid cars are subdivided into two major categories.

In the first type, only the use of electric motor propels the engine at very low speeds. The electric motor has the inherent ability to assist the engine when more power is required. It helps out the gasoline engine even while climbing or passing a steep road. The Ford Escape Hybrid and the Toyota Prius fall into the initial category.

The second of its kind requires extra horsepower for its gasoline engine to drive while in rapid acceleration or when moving up the hill. It utilizes that excess power only from the electric motor to assist the internal combustion engine. The Honda Insight and Civic Hybrid are ideal examples of the second category. These two engines do possess some resemblances as well.

When electric motor is used to assist the gasoline engine, both of the hybrids extract power from the battery depleting power, which in turn gets simultaneously self-recharged from the gasoline engine. Hence a hybrid car does not need to be plugged into a power source to recharge its battery, which is the most important aspect of hybrid cars.

Hybrid cars usually utilize sealed nickel metal hydride batteries, a technology which is popularly used in laptops and cell phones. These batteries are easy to make, cost effective and long lasting thus making it ideal for a higher valued car.

Hybrid engineers more than often have opted for unconventional design facets to maximize aerodynamics inside the engine, giving rise to its slim structure. These car units originally have very low (ultra low) drag coefficient due to sleek configurations, which make the cars slippery. All car makers strive to reduce drag, as a vehicle with less drag requires less power as well as fuel to move.

The electrical system is monitored by an on board computer system. The system is program controlled in such a way that when the vehicle is coasting downhill or the brakes are applied, polarity of the system is automatically reversed as the motor actually turns into an energy generating unit. This process is popularly known as regenerative where the conversion of mechanical energy to electrical energy stores up power into the battery.

All hybrid cars normally shut the gasoline engine off during road signals so as to conserve fuel reserve. The phenomenon is called idle stop characteristics. It cuts electrical consumption down during idle condition other than fuel saving and emission reduction. On pressing the accelerator paddle, the gasoline engine resumes work getting assistance from electric motor. The process being silent and seamless, the loss or delay in overall performance during this time is almost negligible.

The hybrids are manufactured by a special forging process termed as shot peeing, which reduces friction in the sidewalls of the cylinder thus increasing efficiency.

Hybrid cars, thus, by virtue of their technological advancement, exceptional fuel economy and marginal gas emissions, can be easily termed as the next generation cars

Encouragement to drive a Hybrid

The U.S. government has begun to offer tax breaks to those who purchase hybrid cars and trucks. Naturally this is being done to encourage people to buy the slightly more expensive vehicles, and to cut down on the U.S. foreign oil dependency. Not every car, however, qualifies for these tax deductions. Thus, it is a good idea to check with your local tax department before purchasing a hybrid to ensure that it will qualify for the deduction.

The value of the tax break for a hybrid car depends on the make, model and year of the car. Hybrid cars made before 2006 do not qualify for the tax break. If you decide on a particular make and model of a hybrid car, be sure to check with your local department of taxation to see how much of a tax break you'll get.

Meeting the right standards

In order to qualify for tax deductions, the hybrid car purchased must meet certain standards. Once again, you must check with your local tax department to find out the particular requirements in your state.

Some standards for hybrid cars to qualify for a tax deduction include averaging at least 45 miles per gallon and complying with ATPZEV emission standards. Only some models actually meet the 45 mpg standard. These include the Civic Hybrid, Prius, and Insight CVT.

Hybrid cars such as the Ford Escape, Honda Accord, and Lexus RX 400h do not qualify for the U.S. tax deduction because they don't fit miles per gallon criteria .(However the Honda Civic, Toyota Prius, and Honda Insight CVT do). They also do not currently comply with the ATPZEV emission standards. This further hurts their chances of qualifying for the U.S. tax break. So Choice of make & model is essential to qualify.

How much will I get?

So how does this all apply to you? Well, it depends on where you live. For instance, if you live in Colorado, you'll be eligible for a hybrid tax credit of up to $4713. You get this credit once only, in the year of purchase (so if you purchase a car in 2007, you'll get a tax credit that same year).

The value of your tax credit depends on the emissions of the car and the miles per gallon the car gives.. If it gets 40 or more MPG and emits very little pollutants, you can expect 100% of the credit. If it only meets one of the state standards, you'll get 50% of the tax break. In either case, you will get a tax credit.

But what if your car is ultra low emission? Well, then you'll get 75% of the full tax credit. If the hybrid car is super ultra low emission, you'll be able to get 85% of the maximum tax credit. This means that if the max U.S. tax credit is $4,000, you'll get a $3,400 deduction.

As has been mentioned earlier you must check with your state department to determine how much of a hybrid car tax break you'll be eligible for.

More Affordable

Hybrids were once out of reach for most people. However, these tax breaks now make hybrids more affordable for everyone.

Have you been thinking about hybrid cars and maybe wondering what a hybrid is anyway? Well, in this article we will hopefully help you understand them a little better.

A hybrid is very similar to the gasoline powered automobile most people drive today, the big difference is the hybrid also uses batteries as part of their power supply, most hybrid cars on the road right now are gasoline-electric hybrids although, there are some that are diesel-electric, but for the sake of this article we will concentrate on the gasoline-electric powered car.

A gas powered car has a fuel tank, which supplies gasoline to the engine, which turns the transmission, which turns the wheels. The hybrid is a compromise, it attempts to significantly increase mileage and produce fewer emissions than the gas powered car, to be useful for you or me, a hybrid must be able to be refueled quickly and deliver around 300 miles or better between refueling. The fuel tank on a hybrid is very sophisticated. Advanced electronics allow it to act as a motor as well as a generator. It can draw energy from the batteries to accelerate the car, but acting as a generator, can slow the car down and return energy back to the batteries. It takes 1000 pounds of batteries to equal a gallon of gasoline in energy. This combination can and is cutting gasoline consumption substantially. I am sure things will only get better in the future for hybrid cars; they were a long time in coming and will not be for everybody. The cost for the hybrids is not as much as one might think although some do get quite expensive depending on the extras and options added, the same as any new automobile

Right now there are enough on the market to look at to see if maybe a hybrid automobile is for you. At first, the designs seem a bit different, they do take a little time to get used to, but after awhile though they do seem to fit right in and some will get you looking a second time at the smart design. Take a look and maybe a test drive, I think you will be pleasantly surprised at the ride and concept of the new hybrids. They are different and will take some getting used to, but they are much needed and will do away with some of the other gas guzzling automobiles that are on the road today. With the increasing concern about environmental issues such as
pollution and global warming, as well as the unbelievable rise
in the price of gasoline, it is no wonder that hybrid vehicles
are gaining popularity. Hybrid cars have been relatively common
for years, with hybrid Sport Utility Vehicles in close

In 2005, GM introduced hybrid versions of the Chevy Silverado

available nationwide. These hybrid pickup trucks have 5.3
liter V-8 engines which have exactly the same amount of power
and torque as there non-hybrid counterparts (295 horsepower,
325 pound/feet of torque). They can carry the same size loads,
tow the same weights, and accelerate to the same degree that
regular non-hybrid GM pickup trucks can. And they do it all
while providing the most efficient gas mileage of any
full-sized pickup on the marketabout 20 miles per gallon on
the highway. These hybrid trucks also feature a 2400 watt
generator that can be used to power electrical devices, making
them ideal for contractors or construction workers.

When compared to the Toyota Prius, a small hybrid car that gets
50 miles per gallon, 20 mpg might not sound like much. It is in
fact only about a 10 percent difference from the fuel
consumption of regular non-hybrid GM trucks. This is because
the Prius is what is known as a "full hybrid," which means that
its internal combustion engine can shut off completely when the
car is idle or driving at low speeds, relying solely on battery
power and drastically improving fuel efficiency. This type of
fuel savings is great, but it requires a significant compromise
of power, which is something that the general pickup truck owner
simply will not stand for.

Many truck owners use their vehicles for work related purposes,
such as hauling heavy loads, and it is essential that a hybrid
pickup truck be able to do this. If automotive manufacturers
sacrifice power to gain fuel economy in hybrid trucks, their
customers will disappear. Acutely aware of this, General Motors
has decided that a little improvement is better than none at
all.

With fossil fuel emissions at levels of billions of tons per
year and global warming becoming increasingly obvious, it is

Many people have misconceptions about hybrid car batteries: "You don't want a hybrid 'cause every couple days you've gotta plug them in somewhere to recharge the batteries."

But interestingly enough, many hybrid car owners actually would like the ability to plug in their vehicles at night. This way, they can use that much less gasoline; the gas engine part of the hybrid would now need to run that much less when they made their morning commutes. Now, nothing's free--including household electricity. However, the idea here is that the additional charges on their monthly electric bill would still be far less than the added $3.00+ per each additional gallon of fuel. The 2008 and beyond hybrid electric vehicles are supposedly going to have the capability to plug them in.

Another popular myth is that the batteries only last a couple years at the most. Then you've gotta buy thousands of dollars worth of new batteries. This is far from true:

The standard warranty on hybrid batteries usually runs between 80,000 and 100,000 miles. Great advances in battery technology since 2000 have raised the life expectancy to a respectable level in 2007. Taxi services using hybrid-only cars are springing up everywhere...now THAT should raise the eyebrows of hybrid naysayers. The warranty for battery life may be at 100,000 miles, however, taxi services are seeing 200,000 to 300,000 miles with absolutely no degradation in battery performance. And we're talking several large taxi fleets in New York City!

If the batteries DO need replacing, they will cost between $1700 - $3000, not $10,000+ like many folks say.

But the key to this long battery life lies in "smart charging" where the electronic charging computer will not let the battery get charged above around 60% of capacity, nor let it drop below 40% of its capacity. This allows the new NIMH (Nickel Metal Hydride) batteries to run practically forever.

That being said, battery technology remains the main area for the greatest advances in hybrid car technology yet to come. Lighter batteries that hold longer charges and put out higher power is the dream of every hybrid engineering company. Battery technology is where hybrids stand to gain the most benefit.

The main hope for improving this situation for hybrid cars lies with lithium batteries. These are the same batteries that are currently used to power laptops and cameras. They provide a much more concentrated and therefore smaller way of storing energy as electricity. While lithium batteries are the best option for batteries in hybrids now, they aren't without problems...

The problem with lithium batteries is making them big enough so that they can store enough energy to power hybrid cars without having to revert to the gas engine when driving in town. Lithium batteries are very efficient when manufactured to a certain capacity and size. But if this is increased they are subject to a condition called thermal run off. This can cause larger batteries to overheat and in some instances they can actually catch fire! (You've noticed how hot laptop computer batteries can get.)

The main problem is the cobalt, a metal used in the manufacture of lithium batteries. Many manufacturers have been working on a solution to this problem. The most promising solution seems to be replacing the cobalt with phosphate. This produces a much safer and more reliable battery. There is some power loss as opposed to using cobalt only, but the batteries should still be a long way ahead of conventional lead-acid and NiMH batteries now used in hybrid cars.

these no brainier methods to start saving money on gas right
now even if you don't know how to change a tire.

1 Get A Gas Card

Want a tip that will save you money every single time you fill
up at the pump no matter what vehicle you drive? It's a gas
card. Just about every major gas station offers their own brand
of gas credit card that will allow you to save 3-5% on all your
gas purchases at their gas stations. Forget about the branded
gas cards and get one that will save you 5% on gas no matter
where you fill up, like the Discover Open Road Card. Just
remember, pay it off every month or it won't save you any
money.

Saving 5% off every gallon of gas means that $3/gallon gas now
costs only $2.85 and $4/gallon becomes $3.80. If you have a 25
gallon tank, you'd save $3.75 every time you filled up
($3/gallon gas).

A lot of people use a credit card when filling up at the pump
anyway since it's easy and convenient. You may as well get a
gas card so it's easy, convenient, and saving you money.

2 Avoid Aggressive Driving

Hitting the gas hard when the light turns green and braking
hard will make your car drink gas faster than a drunk at an
open bar at a wedding. If you were to drive away from a stop at
a more moderate pace, accelerate in traffic more slowly, and
anticipate when you're going to need to brake ahead of time so
you can do so slowly, you're going to save a lot of gas up to

3 Use Your Cruise Control

Personally, I won't buy a car if it doesn't have cruise
control, since it means I don't have to worry so much about
keeping my speed constant. However, cruise control also had the
added benefit of saving you gas too. On average, you'll save
about 7% more gas than if you don't use cruise control.

4 Slow Down

Sure, going fast can be fun. It can also get you a nice
collection of speeding tickets, but more importantly, the
faster you drive the more gas you use. I'm not saying that you
need to drive like your grandmother, but slowing down from 75
to 65 can you 12% on you gas bill, and unless you're driving
across the country, the time difference in getting where you're
going will be minimal.

5 Stop Idling

Having the car running when it's not moving wastes gas.

I remember being taught when I was first learning to drive that
you should let your car warm up for a few minutes before driving
it anywhere when it's cold outside. While that may be true for
older cars, modern cars don't need warm up time before being
ready to drive. Don't drive like a maniac (see #2) before you
car is completely warmed up and you'll be fine.

If you going to be sitting and waiting some place without
moving for more than about a minute, turn off the engine. It
probably goes without saying that if you can avoid rush hour
traffic, you should.

Also, one great place to sit and waste gas is your local fast
food drive-thru. Get off your lazy butt, get out of your car
and go inside to get your food.

6 Plan Ahead

Instead of driving to the gym, going home, driving to work,
driving home, driving to the store, and then home again, start
combining trips whenever possible. This is really easy to do if
you just think ahead. Avoid just spontaneously hopping in the
car and driving to the store to pick up some milk and eggs.
Think about what else you can do if you're going to be out
running errands anyway so that you can avoid another trip
later.

5 You got legs use'em

Really want to save money on gas? Then use your legs. A lot of
trips aren't really that far, and while it takes a little
longer to walk somewhere than to drive there, it's a good
chance to get outside, get some fresh air and get some exercise
in the process. It's really not necessary to drive absolutely
everywhere unless you happen to live in the middle of nowhere.
So get yourself a comfortable pair of tennis shoes and start
walking instead of driving when you can.

Also, a bicycle is a nice compromise between the two, and can
actually be faster to get some places than a car. I remember
when I was in college and moved off campus although we lived
almost 2 miles from campus, it was a lot faster for me to take
my bicycle to go to class than to take my car.

Unlike many millions of people, I need a small SUV for my business. We need the space to carry tools, a ladder, a laptop, antennas, boxes of cable, and the electronic equipment to be installed at a customers location.

We had been using a Chevy Blazer for the last 4 years that had accumulated about 130,000 miles and was getting around 16 miles per gallon. We had never had any trouble with the Blazer but, with the accumulated miles, I was getting concerned it would start to have problems about the time the weather broke this year and we really got busy doing installations. Also, presently gas is about $2.75 a gallon here in Illinois and I believe it will just continue to trend upward in price.

So, with Hybrid in the back of my mind, I started to look around for a new vehicle. We had to have something to carry all that gear in so that eliminated anything like a Prius or Honda Civic. So I got online and found the Ford Escape. It looked like just what we needed as long as I could get it in four wheel drive. The dealer finally found one at a dealer about 350 miles away and they drove it over so we could try it out. We did and subsequently purchased a new Ford Escape Hybrid in January, 2007.

I think most people with four wheel drive vehicles really do not need four wheel drive for any real reason, but, I do. We live in the country and have a quarter mile private lane to the public road. In February we woke up to about 8 inches of snow on the ground and about 35 mile per hour winds. Our lane was drifted shut and the road was drifted shut. At about 9 in the morning our electricity went off.

Now no electricity is a major pain but we still had heat because we have a wood stove. Not so for my 83 year old mother-in-law who lives alone in another house about 1/2 mile across a field from our house. After about 2 hours of no electricity her house started to get cold. She has a propane fireplace but was afraid to try to light it.

At first I thought I would walk over and light the fireplace and I actually did bundle up and start off across the field to her house. The wind was brutal out in the open and about a third of the way I noticed that most of the snow had blown off of the field and was probably up covering the road. So I went back and got in the Escape to drive over.

The Escape has an automatic four wheel drive system that engages the four wheel drive as needed. This was the first time I would actually put it to the test. Although most of the snow had blown off one side of the hill in the field the other side was waves of drifts but at least I had a run at it and made it over to my mother-in-laws house with no problem.

Later in the day I drove through the field up to the road but decided not to try the road because all that snow that had come off the field was definitely on the road. Believe me it is quite possible to get a four wheel drive vehicle stuck because I have done it. The road grader cleared the roads and our lane later that day only to have the wind start blowing hard the next day from another direction and deposit another bunch of drifts across the lane. But the Escape four wheel drive handled it pretty well.

At first the mileage on the Escape was about 24.5 miles per gallon. The dealer had told me that the mileage would begin to climb after about 5000 miles. I am not sure why that is but now at about 4000 miles the mileage is up to about 28.5 miles per gallon. The mileage estimate on the car is about 31 miles per gallon. I think when I start to average 30 miles per gallon I will be delighted and feel like we have accomplished one reason for the purchase of the Ford Escape Hybrid.

The 2007 Hyundai Sonata is a stylish new vehicle. While the old
version reminded many car patrons of a Jaguar in terms of style,
the 2007 version looks even better, with a front lamp that

ridges, sharp bumps and fast curves.

The 2007 Sonata, which is the smaller of Hyundai's two midsize
sedans, comes in three models. The Sonata Limited trim is the
top-line model and has a 235-hp V6 and 5-speed automatic as
well as heated front seats, automatic climate control and fine
leather upholstery. Like the Limited, the Sonata SE also has a
235-hp V6 and 5-speed automatic. Meanwhile, the Sonata GLS has
162-hp 4-cylinders and a choice of either 4-speed automatic or
5-speed manual transmission. All models are equipped with ABS
and traction/antiskid control as well as front-side and
curtain-side airbags.

Overall, the Sonata's advantage over other cars of its class
such as the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry and Nissan Altima is
that combines comfort, spaciousness, sophisticated design and
reliable performance as well as a reasonable price.

In a nutshell, the 2007 Sonata is a bigger, sharper and more
technologically advanced version than the 2006 model, which was
re-designed and launched as an all-new model last year. This
year's Sonata promises to be even more highly regarded than the
2006 version, which is no mean feat considering that last year's
Sonata was a certified darling of the automotive press.

According to MotorWeek, the 2006 Sonata was the "Best Family

people complain that it's difficult to get into the driver's

I'm happy with my existing Chevy Blazer which is not a hybrid vehicle

I have Chevy Blazer for the last 4 years

The long troubled car maker that is Ford has been trying to bust into the hybrid game for quite a long time. DaimlerChrysler AG's Mercedes-Benz luxury car brand has finally come up with a decision that involves their entry into the hybrid powertrain class. The Stuttgart-based automaker will develop a hybrid model for their several vehicle classes ranging from the subcompact A-Class models up to the S-Class luxury sedans.

Last week, Thomas Weber, the head of development for Mercedes Car Group has told the automotive press at the 77th annual Geneva International Motor Show about the Mercedes-Benz hybrid. He said: "In 2009, we will have the first Mercedes-branded hybrid on the market."

Meanwhile, here is what Dieter Zetsche, Chief Executive Officer of DaimlerChrysler AG said in a recent interview with Auto Motor und Sport, one of Germany's premiere automotive publications: "We will not develop new vehicles without including a hybrid model option. We will offer out customers the right product."

Zetsche also said that the environment is very important for the company, and developing a Mercedes-Benz hybrid model will allow them to significantly contribute to the environment.

DaimlerChrysler's plan to focus on cars with diesel engines instead of focusing in hybrid powertrain technology was earlier dismissed due to some customer demands, according to the German automaker.

Zetsche also commented on the announcement made by Mercedes-Benz and BMW last week regarding the collaboration on the development of hybrid system. He said: "We will combine our knowledge and skills with BMW Group in order to accelerate the development of the hybrid project. With the mild hybrid, we can obtain 70 percent of the effect of a full hybrid with only 30 percent of the effort."

Zetsche further explains that the new models that will be offered some time in 2009 are equipped with mild hybrid powertrain systems, which include a diesel of petrol engine combined with an electric motor, unlike full hybrid models developed by other automakers that can run solely on electric power in a limited range. A mild hybrid powertrain system provides an increased acceleration and performance along with low fuel consumption and lower exhaust emissions.

Unfortunately, Mr. Zetsche said he will not give more details about the Mercedes-Benz's hybrid plans in the future. In fact, he did not include the exact schedule for the launch of their first ever mild hybrid model.

Along with the mild hybrid power train system, Zetsch also said that they will introduce other innovative car technologies in the future including the start/stop system and new alternator that can be disconnected from the engine during acceleration. These new technologies are being developed at the company's headquarters in Stuttgart, Germany.

With the recent drop in oil and gas prices, I'm sure many of us have forgotten the good driving habits we learned when we were paying $1 more a gallon of gas. It's amazing how quickly we forget to pay attention to our gas mileage when our gas bill is cut by a third.

Now that the summer's ridiculously high gas prices are pretty much right around the corner, I figured it was time for a refresher course on the best/easiest ways for you to either not use gas or get better gas mileage when you do have to drive.

So, without further ado, here are the Top 10 Easiest Ways for You to Save Gas and Get Better Gas Mileage:

1. Don't drive if you don't have to. This one comes first because it's simply the most obvious; if you don't drive you're going to save gas. If you can get away with walking or riding a bike to get where you need to go, by all means, do it.

2. If you do have to drive, try and car pool, ride share or mass transit. If you can get a whole bunch of people packed into a car or a bus, the total amount of gas used is going to be a lot less than if everyone took their own cars. Plus, if you can get someone else to drive, you're going to save your own money!

3. Combine all of your small trips. Continuously starting and turning off your car is pretty tough on your gas mileage, not to mention all of the stop and go driving associated with short trips. Go ahead and combine all of those short trips and you should see an increase in gas mileage.

4. Use moderate acceleration. When the light turns green or it's your turn to go, don't floor it and try to get to top speed as quickly as possible. That being said don't go so slowly that your engine is bogged down, because that's just as bad for your gas mileage.

5. Try and drive near the speed limit. This one is a bit tricky because a car's optimal gas mileage is going to vary by make and model, but for the most part, the slower you drive the better gas mileage you're going to get. So, instead of driving 75 on the highway, go ahead and cut it back to 55 or 60.

6. Be a smooth driver - don't tap your brakes and coast when possible. Much like using moderate acceleration, being a smooth and consistent driver once you're moving will help you significantly improve your gas mileage.

7. Make sure you have the proper tire pressure. Under inflated tires tend to reduce your car's gas mileage. To get the proper tire pressure, check either your car's owner's manual or the side of your tires.

8. Get rid of all the extra weight. For every extra 100 pounds you carry around in your car, you're going to reduce your car's gas mileage by up to 2%. That means you need to get all of the unnecessary items - golf clubs, CD cases, various sports equipment - out of your car.

9. Be as aerodynamic as possible - keep windows up and sunroof closed. Obviously, your car's going to get its best gas mileage when it's as aerodynamic as possible. Having your windows open will increase the drag on your car, thus reducing its gas mileage.

10. Reduce the amount of time you sit in idle. Surprise, surprise, when your car stops moving when your engine is running it's gas mileage drops to zero. Avoid getting stuck in traffic, using drive thrus, etc., and only drive if you're going to keep moving.

It's a gasoline-electric hybrid car and driving in the HOV lane is just one of the benefits of ownership in many states. But what is a hybrid? How does it work? Is it the right car for you and your family?

A hybrid car has a both a gasoline engine and a battery. The battery is recharged by energy from the gasoline engine that would normally be lost during braking or decelerating. The car uses either the battery or the gasoline engine depending on several factors including how fast the car is traveling. Sometimes, both will work together to provide an extra boost of power without using too much extra fuel.

The result of this technology is cars that get significantly better gas mileage and produce less carbon dioxide emissions that traditional gasoline powered cars. For example, according to Honda, the 2006 Civic Hybrid gets 50 miles to the gallon on the highway, 14 miles to the gallon better than the 2003 regular Civic. In the early days of hybrid cars, there were few models to choose from. People desiring to purchase a hybrid car were stuck in tiny cars with little cargo space. Today, however, manufacturers produce hybrid cars and light trucks in nearly every category including family-sized sedans, sport utility vehicles and minivans. The smallest cars still get the best gas mileage, but larger hybrids consistently outperform their regular siblings in gas mileage and carbon dioxide emissions.

Unfortunately, hybrid cars cost more than regular models. In the case of the 2006 Honda Civic, the hybrid model costs almost $7,000 more than the regular model. Congress passed a law providing tax credits for hybrid car owners that took effect on January 1, 2006 that would save the buyer of a 2006 Civic Hybrid $2,100. It would take several years to break even on the purchase of a hybrid counting gasoline savings alone. However, many hybrid owners are as dedicated to the environmental benefits of driving a hybrid as they are to the money they save.

One of the fears when hybrid cars first became available was that maintenance and insurance costs would be prohibitive. Research has shown that regular maintenance costs for hybrid vehicles are no higher than for regular vehicles. Additionally, hybrid car owners are less likely to be involved in accidents and some insurance companies have begun offering discounts to hybrid car owners.

1. Tire Pressure Check: Tire pressures should be routinely checked on cold tires, including spares and caravan (or trailer) tires. 4. The insides of the tires must be scrutinized thoroughly in case of impacts due to pot holes or other obtrusions or in the case of punctures.

5. While parking the car, avoid parking on patches of oil, gasoline, diesel, lubricants and other such solvents as they are bound to damage the tires.

6. Tires tend to last longer when proper speeds are maintained and are loaded appropriately. Unduly loading the vehicle and driving at higher speeds than recommended can be dangerous and might damage the tires beyond repair.

7. Follow the tire rotation cycles as close to those recommended as possible. This affects tire life.

8. Tire life also depends on road surfaces, driving habits and style and speeds. So it might help if you can make sure that the surface you drive on are commutable and that you drive at optimal speeds and go easy on the handling part.

9. Use recommended tools to load and unload tires on axle end shafts or rims. Check for damaged or bent rims while loading tires and use proper tools while doing the same. Non compliant tools can only mar and damage the tyres and are sometimes even dangerous to work with.

10. General tire condition has to be checked regularly by rated experts for increased life and safety of the car tires. Unsafe car tyres would only mean suicide and there is no reason to be living on edge with something as negligent as not checking for the safety of your vehicle's tyres.
